Your draft card carries the most powerful truth: you were created by God. That alone is the greatest thing it could ever say. Regardless of your past, your present, or where you currently stand in your relationship with Jesus, this remains true.

You are God’s handiwork.

You were not a mistake. You were not randomly placed in this world. You were intentionally created by the hands of God. And if there’s one thing you take away, let it be this: you belong on God’s team.

You Were Drafted With Purpose

Ephesians 2|10 reminds us, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” That means not only do you belong on the team, but there’s a position for you to play.

You weren’t drafted to sit on the sidelines. You weren’t called to spectate. You were drafted because there is a specific role only you can fill in the Kingdom of God. God didn’t call you randomly. He called you intentionally. He crafted you with care, knowing the good works prepared in advance for your life.

No one else can play your position. Not the person next to you. Not your pastor. Not your friend. Just you. That’s how personal your calling is.

Chosen, Called, and Changed

When players are drafted into professional sports, they come on stage, hug the commissioner, and put on the team hat. That moment symbolizes the beginning of a new season. Their journey with the team has officially started.

Spiritually speaking, when you respond to God’s call, you’re doing the same. You’re stepping into a new season. You’re putting on the identity of someone who belongs. You’re accepting the reality that you’ve been chosen.

Peter echoes this truth in 1 Peter 2|9-10:

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God. Once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”

Your life changes when you accept this call. More than a change of team. It’s a change of eternity.

Are You Answering the Call?

Some of us have been searching for purpose. We’ve been longing to belong. That longing isn’t random. It’s the call of God ringing in your life. The question isn’t whether God is calling. The question is whether you’re going to answer.

There’s a story of a man named Norm Michael, a fullback from Syracuse University who, after an injury, left college to fight in World War II. Decades later, he discovered something incredible. He had been drafted into the NFL by the Philadelphia Eagles, but he never got the call. He lived 55 years without knowing he’d been chosen.

How many of us are living the same way spiritually?

God has had your name on His draft board from the beginning of time. He’s been calling your name, but you may not have picked up the phone. And like Norm, you might be sitting in the stands unaware that you’re supposed to be in the game.

You Are Not Disqualified

Maybe it’s hard to believe you’ve been called. Maybe the enemy has whispered that you’re not good enough. That your past disqualifies you. That your highlight reel isn’t impressive. That you don’t have the stats.

But that’s not how God sees you.

God doesn’t call us based on who we are. He calls us based on who we can become through His grace. Just like athletes grow and develop after being drafted, God’s call is the beginning of a journey. A process of growth. Of maturity. Of transformation.

God didn’t call you because of your brokenness. He called you because of the person His grace wants to form in you.

Two Groups, One Call

There are two groups of people hearing this message today, and both are being called.

1. You’ve Joined the Team, But You’re Sitting Out

You’ve answered the call. You’ve been baptized. You’ve put on the jersey. But somewhere along the way, you’ve stopped pressing forward.

Paul says in Philippians 3|14, “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

Some of us need to be honest. We’re on the team, but we’re not putting in the reps. We’re not practicing. We’ve accepted the invitation but haven’t fully stepped into the mission.

If that’s you, today is your reminder. You were called to something greater. It’s time to get off the sidelines and step onto the field. Maybe that means joining a team or a group. Maybe it’s committing to spiritual disciplines like prayer, reading the Word, or worshiping with a renewed heart.

Don’t let your calling sit unused. Step into your position.

2. You’ve Never Answered the Call

Maybe you’ve never accepted Jesus. Maybe you’re still unsure about this whole faith thing. But deep down, you know you’ve been searching—for purpose, for peace, for hope.

Romans 10|9 says, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

That’s the invitation. That’s the call. And today, the phone is ringing.

God is calling your name. He’s inviting you onto His team. He’s offering you belonging, purpose, and eternal hope. If you’ve believed the lie that you’re too far gone, hear the words of Jesus: “Repent and believe, and you will be saved.”

The Final Question

So, what’s your answer?

Because again, the question is not whether or not God is calling. The question is—will you answer the phone?

You were created for this. You were called to this. You are chosen. You are God’s handiwork.

And there is a position only you can play.

Now is the time to step onto the field.
