How To Get What You Really Want – Week 1

Speaker: Grant Agler

What do you want?

We want our way

When we get what we want, we get in our own way

We can’t get our way and have it too

We want to do, what we want to do

We want perpetual pleasure

Pleasure is addictive, which undermines the pleasure, which isn’t what we want

We want it now!

Later is longer

Regret:

Regret: “I want to go back in time and not get what I wanted

What do you want?

If we always get our way, we get in our own way, and we lose our way

If we get what we want now, it may keep us from getting what we want later

What causes fights and quarrels among you?
James 4:1

What causes fights and quarrels among you?
Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?
James 4:1

You desire but do not have, so you kill.
You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight.
James 4:2

How to get what your really want?

Most of us do not know what we really want, because we are distracted by what we want

What we really want, lurks in a realm we rarely explore

You do not have because you do not ask God.
James 4:2

When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
James 4:3

God doesn’t want something from you
God wants something for you

Grant is our resident farmboy. He grew up in the cornfields of northwest Nebraska. He spent his early days living far from God. As Grant says, "I gave God the middle finger and didn't really care about faith at all." As a young man, he became convinced that God was real. He gave his life to Jesus and experienced God's amazing grace that previously made no sense to him. After experiencing that grace, Grant felt God calling him to teach the message of the gospel. Over the past 20 years, he has been preaching and teaching. Grant, his wife, Bethany, and their four children moved to Michigan in 2011, and he joined the 2|42 team in 2019. Grant is always good for a laugh, but more importantly, he explains biblical concepts in ways anyone can understand.
