The concept of faith is often misunderstood. It is over intellectualized or chalked up to an experience. Because most of us don’t really know what it is, we are left confused. Do I have faith? What would I need to change to have it?
Our intuitive definition of faith is generally much different than the Biblical definition. Even the Webster Dictionary has a definition that is lacking a key component:
FAITH \ˈfāth\ strong belief or trust in someone or something.
The biblical definition of faith is in Hebrews 11:1:
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
Faith is different than anything else you have ever experienced! Our lives are built on a logical substructure that we can see- A foundation that we have experienced and tested. Faith is building our lives on a logical substructure that we cannot see- To make choices based on a reality that we believe in. To place our hope in a God that is evident yet invisible. It is making a choice to live counter to the majority of the world.
The Gap
When someone makes a decision to follow God, they are taking a logical step. However, there remains a gap. A gap between what you have experienced and what God desires of you. A gap between what everyone else does and what the Bible teaches. God asks us to “jump” the gap. To set aside our experience, and the general opinion of those we know, and take a leap. It isn’t a blind leap, but it does require us to put our assurance in something we do not see.
Jump!
In this new series we talk practically about faith. We bring clarity to what the “jump” is and how to take it.
