One of the most powerful truths we can take from the Christmas story is this. There is majesty in modesty. God has a consistent history of using ordinary, everyday people to accomplish extraordinary things. Nowhere is this more evident than in Luke 2:8-18.

In this moment of the Christmas story, we see something that challenges all human logic. God chooses to break centuries of silence and declare the arrival of the Messiah, not to kings, not to priests, not to scholars, but to shepherds. These were men doing the graveyard shift, watching their flocks at night, performing a job considered below entry-level in their society. This was routine, thankless, and often invisible work.

Yet it is in this lowly setting that the glory of the Lord appears.

The Night Shift That Changed Everything

The shepherds were out in the fields, likely tired, going through the motions of another uneventful night. Then suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared, and the glory of God surrounded them. Their natural response was fear. But the angel quickly comforted them, announcing “good news that will cause great joy for all the people.” The Messiah had been born. The Savior had arrived. And they would find him wrapped in cloths, lying in a manger.

This moment was not only divine. It was deliberate. God could have announced the birth of Jesus to rulers or to those with influence. Instead, He chose the overlooked and the ordinary. He entrusted them with the most important announcement in human history.

Then, as if the appearance of one angel wasn’t enough, the heavens opened with a multitude of angels praising God. “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” This heavenly host didn’t perform for the elite. They revealed themselves to lowly shepherds.

Think about that. God didn’t need an audience with clout. He wanted faithfulness.

From Ordinary to First Evangelists

Once the angels left, the shepherds didn’t waste time. Scripture says they hurried to Bethlehem. They found Mary, Joseph, and the baby, just as the angel had said. And after seeing Jesus, they didn’t stay silent. They spread the word. Everyone who heard what the shepherds told them was amazed.

These shepherds became the first evangelists of the gospel. The first to tell others that the long-awaited Messiah had come. The same shepherds who were despised and dismissed by society were the first voices to proclaim the arrival of the Savior.

Imagine just showing up to work one day, doing the same thing you’ve always done. You feel unseen, unheard, unimportant. And then, in the middle of your ordinary, God shows up in an extraordinary way.

That’s the power of surrender.

Ordinary Does Not Mean Insignificant

This story isn’t just about shepherds. It’s about you. Maybe you’ve been made to feel that your life doesn’t carry weight. Maybe you believe that your job, your role, or your background disqualifies you from being used by God. Maybe you think that because you don’t have the accolades, education, or title, you’re somehow insignificant.

But if God chose shepherds, if He revealed heaven’s greatest news to those without influence, what makes you think He can’t use you?

You might be a stay-at-home parent. You might be stuck in a job that feels dead-end. Maybe you didn’t finish school. Maybe you didn’t meet your family’s expectations. But none of that disqualifies you from being used by God. The qualifications God looks for are not based on resumes or status. He looks for surrender.

And throughout Scripture, we see this pattern repeated.

God used Abraham, a man who left everything he knew to follow a promise he couldn’t yet see.
He used Jacob, a deceiver, and changed his name to Israel, birthing a nation through him.
He used David, a young shepherd boy, to slay giants and become king.
He used Moses, a man with a speech impediment, to lead His people out of Egypt.
He used fishermen, tax collectors, and sinners to turn the world upside down.

What do all these have in common? They were ordinary. But they were surrendered.

Even Jesus Lived an Ordinary Life

Jesus Himself modeled this truth. For thirty years, He lived a life that looked just like everyone else’s. No miracles. No public ministry. Just an ordinary life. He came from an ordinary family, worked an ordinary trade, and lived in an ordinary town.

And yet, He was the extraordinary Savior of the world.

At His baptism, God affirmed Him publicly. From there, Jesus began a three-year ministry that would change the course of history. But don’t miss this. The first thirty years of His life were filled with quiet faithfulness.

That’s what makes the shepherds’ story so powerful. The ordinary welcomed the divine. And when they did, they were never the same.

God Makes Ordinary Things Extraordinary

The core truth is simple. God makes ordinary things extraordinary when they are surrendered to Him.

That includes you.

Don’t let the enemy convince you that your ordinariness is a limitation. In God’s hands, it’s potential. The world may see routine, but God sees readiness. The world may overlook, but God calls. The world may doubt, but God declares.

The shepherds remind us that being ordinary does not mean being insignificant. It means being positioned. Positioned to hear from God. Positioned to carry His message. Positioned to be part of something far greater than ourselves.

So keep showing up. Keep being faithful. Keep doing what seems small. Because one day, God may use your ordinary in a way that leaves others amazed and brings glory to Him.

Remember: Majesty lives in modesty. And God delights in using the ordinary to reveal the extraordinary.
