I was a high school pastor for nine years, and one of my favorite parts of the summer was attending graduation open houses for the graduating seniors. I had known many of these students throughout their high school years, and I loved seeing their childhood photos, especially the middle school ones. After all, who doesn’t have their best photos from that awkward stage of life?
Inspired by seeing so many middle school photos, I decided to share my own sixth-grade photo with my congregation. It’s not something I’m particularly proud of, but it’s a reminder of the importance of faith even in the most embarrassing moments.
As I began this new series, Schooled, I want to emphasize the importance of faith-related lessons that can be learned outside of school. One of the most crucial lessons is found in Hebrews 11, often referred to as the “Hall of Faith” chapter. This chapter teaches us that faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
The foundation of our faith is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which offers forgiveness and a way to have a relationship with God. The story of Enoch, a man who walked faithfully with God for 300 years and was taken to heaven without experiencing death, is a powerful example of this.
Walking with God is a personal journey that involves getting to know him and being known by him. It requires intentional practices like reading and studying scripture, prayer, and building community with other believers.
As I reflect on my own faith journey, I’ve found that these three practices have been particularly impactful. Reading scripture helps me understand God’s character and promises, prayer deepens my relationship with him, and community provides support and encouragement.
I encourage you to take your own next steps in walking with God. Whether it’s through reading scripture, praying, joining a group or team, or sharing your faith with others, remember that your faith will grow as you continue to walk with him.
