a242 my name is tony i'm one of the
0:03
pastors around here just so excited to
0:05
be with you today today we we do
0:07
something a little bit different we
0:08
gather together as all of our campuses
0:10
so saginaw monroe livonia taylor ann
0:13
arbor lansing brighton all come together
0:15
to
0:17
really just slow down your experience
0:19
that in your life like i'm sure at some
0:21
point in time you've you've driven down
0:23
the road and you saw what we've all seen
0:26
a police officer sitting on the side of
0:27
the road what do you do you pump those
0:29
brakes don't you because you
0:31
you're probably going a little bit too
0:33
fast
0:34
we have moments in our lives that we
0:36
just our pace of life is a little bit
0:38
dare i say crazy
0:40
uh years ago my family was involved in a
0:42
church plant and what was a great season
0:44
of our lives when we came out of that
0:46
season we
0:47
realized the level of stress and anxiety
0:49
that our family was experiencing because
0:51
we were in such a hurry it was go
0:54
go go what we needed to learn was to
0:56
man just slow down
0:58
in life
1:00
i remember wondering during that church
1:01
plant season is
1:03
is this what ministry is like
1:05
i mean more importantly
1:07
is this the way of jesus
1:09
running myself ragged always being in a
1:11
hurry
1:12
and i spent those years constantly in a
1:14
hurry
1:15
and what i learned during that time well
1:17
well after that time honestly
1:20
when we're constantly in a hurry we have
1:22
no time to self-reflect on who we're
1:24
becoming
1:25
this series that we start today as we
1:27
enter into the final stretch of summer
1:29
rapidly approaching fall you know that
1:32
time when kids go back to school and
1:34
their activities ramp back up
1:36
time of year that ushers us into the
1:38
holiday season filled with family
1:40
gatherings parties and a million other
1:42
things on our calendars
1:44
this series
1:45
is all about slowing
1:47
down
1:48
i i mean like
1:50
like way
1:52
down
1:53
this series is about changing the pace
1:55
of our lives
1:57
in order to be
1:58
better connected with god
2:01
for those of you who are weary
2:03
for those of you who are burdened for
2:05
those of you who are tired of
2:07
a life of hurry
2:08
if you think
2:10
there must be a better way to live
2:12
you're going to love this series
2:14
we're going to look at things like
2:16
silence
2:18
solitude
2:20
sabbath
2:21
and simplicity
2:23
and if you lean into all the things that
2:25
we're talking about over the next few
2:26
weeks you're going to discover a model
2:28
in jesus that's not a life of hurry but
2:31
but rather an easier life
2:33
because jesus promises his way of life
2:36
is unhurried
2:39
if you have your bibles with you today
2:40
which i encourage you to do so would you
2:42
go ahead and flip to matthew chapter 11.
2:43
we're going to find ourselves there here
2:45
in just a few minutes so keep your
2:46
finger there we're going to look at a
2:48
really important passage about living an
2:50
unhurried life
2:52
because friends we are we are busy
2:54
people
2:55
and we love being busy in fact i would
2:58
say it's a it's a cultural value in a
3:00
way
3:00
when you ask someone how they are one of
3:03
the common responses we get is oh i'm
3:05
good just busy
3:08
it's as if being busy has become a badge
3:10
of honor
3:11
if you're busy you're important
3:13
if you're busy you're successful
3:17
all remember the beginning of the
3:18
pandemic when things shut down and we
3:19
were all forced to
3:21
slow down
3:23
i mean some of us we had to slow way
3:25
down
3:26
we just couldn't be as busy as we were
3:28
before and our lives became
3:30
well it became unhurried
3:32
some of y'all freaked out
3:34
because being in a hurry was who you are
3:38
and your identity
3:39
was challenged
3:41
i mean tucked away deep in the recesses
3:43
of all that happened during that time
3:45
god gave us all an amazing gift
3:48
he gave us our time back
3:51
and an opportunity to control our
3:53
calendars
3:54
rather than the other way around
3:56
to re-prioritize things to adjust the
3:58
pace of our lives
4:00
yet for many of us what's happened
4:02
we were right back when we started
4:05
busier than ever more hurried than than
4:07
ever before
4:08
but it's understandable right we just
4:10
gravitate toward being busy
4:13
i mean even when we're not busy we busy
4:15
ourselves with binge watching tv
4:17
scrolling social media playing whatever
4:20
new game craze is on our phones
4:23
being still and unhurried has become a
4:26
lost art
4:28
this hurried life is has been increasing
4:30
for centuries get this in 1370 way back
4:34
then the first public clock tower was
4:36
built in germany
4:38
before that the days were well they were
4:40
natural i mean summer days were longer
4:42
and busier winter days were shorter and
4:44
slower
4:45
everyone went to bed with the moon and
4:47
woke up with the sun there was a there
4:48
was a rhythm to life that was natural
4:51
the clock created artificial time
4:54
the nine to five year round schedule
4:57
came into play
4:58
in 1879 the average american slept 11
5:02
hours per night
5:04
now the average is down to about seven
5:05
hours
5:07
in the 1960s and 1970s digital
5:09
technology took off and we wondered what
5:12
would happen when robots and machines
5:14
did all the work
5:15
in fact in 1967 a senate subcommittee
5:18
estimated that by 1985 the average
5:22
american would work hear this 22 hours
5:25
per week in 27 weeks a year
5:28
the concern
5:30
was that we'd have too much leisure time
5:32
on our hands
5:34
leisure used to be a sign of wealth but
5:36
now i mean ads are different ads used to
5:39
show rich people relaxing on beaches now
5:41
rich people are shown in fancy meeting
5:43
rooms with expensive suits and haircuts
5:46
relaxation actually
5:48
hurts your status in american
5:50
society and with the rise of the
5:52
internet and smartphones our attention
5:54
span has dropped to eight seconds so
5:58
listen up those of you who lost
6:00
attention already
6:01
advertisers are spending billions
6:04
to get you to give them those eight
6:06
seconds of attention
6:08
but guess what
6:09
you don't need any of those stats to
6:11
tell you that we have a problem
6:12
because you feel it
6:14
you feel it in your uneasiness of your
6:16
spirit
6:19
you are tired
6:21
you're worn out
6:23
you're stressed
6:24
you're irritable you're anxious
6:27
you're busy
6:28
and life is passing you by
6:31
you don't need these stats because you
6:33
know there's a problem
6:35
we are in a hurry
6:39
so how do we eliminate it
6:41
how do we eliminate hurry from our lives
6:43
how do we in a world that is not slowing
6:46
down
6:47
just simply
6:48
slow
6:49
down
6:51
the solution to your problem you're
6:52
ready for it take notes write it down
6:55
follow jesus
6:57
i know a shocking thing to hear in
6:58
church and honestly maybe a bit cliche
7:01
but throughout the new testament jesus
7:03
modeled and taught a way of life without
7:06
hurry
7:07
a life full of
7:08
peace and love and he invites you
7:11
to follow him in that
7:13
in fact hear these words in john chapter
7:15
16 verse 33
7:17
jesus says i have told you these things
7:20
so that in me
7:22
you may have peace
7:24
in this world you will have trouble but
7:26
take heart i have overcome
7:28
the world. okay so so i resonate with
7:32
the whole this world will have trouble
7:34
lying i mean i seem to have no trouble
7:36
experiencing that with little effort
7:39
but that peace thing that jesus talks
7:40
about
7:43
not as easy to come by
7:45
i want to know
7:47
i want to know how to find that
7:49
i mean it's easy to read right past it
7:51
but jesus makes two important statements
7:53
about where to find that peace
7:56
for starters he says the words in
7:59
me
8:00
you will have peace
8:02
peace in this world friends is not
8:04
achieved by accomplishing more or going
8:06
faster
8:07
some of us that's been our mo in life
8:10
striving to find peace and are
8:12
overworking stressed out anxious lives
8:14
but jesus says
8:16
peace is found in him
8:19
if you want to experience peace
8:21
you will put your trust in jesus
8:23
and follow his way
8:24
and then jesus says
8:27
take heart
8:28
i have overcome
8:30
the world
8:32
we don't have to stress about it
8:35
we don't have to worry
8:37
how does that sound in your life
8:39
a life of no worry
8:42
when we place our trust in him we
8:44
we find peace because the victory is his
8:48
we can rest in him
8:50
despite our troubles
8:52
but i think for jesus the unhurried life
8:54
wasn't just about the things we do it
8:56
was
8:57
also about our hearts
8:59
and and how we feel
9:01
check this out when jesus says this and
9:03
in chapter 13 of the gospel of john
9:06
verse 34
9:07
he says a new command i give you
9:10
love one another as i have loved you
9:13
so you must love one another
9:18
jesus unhurried life by loving people
9:21
and friends loving others
9:23
it takes time
9:24
i mean think about it whenever you feel
9:26
like you aren't loving people
9:28
it's usually because you
9:31
don't have time
9:33
when you're pressed for time and running
9:35
late maybe trying to get to church on
9:37
time
9:39
you walked in like everything was fine
9:40
but you know the argument you and your
9:42
spouse had this morning
9:44
and how you yelled at the kids because
9:45
they weren't ready in time
9:47
i mean i always personally know how the
9:49
morning at home went based on what time
9:51
my family arrives at church
9:54
because we
9:56
we're in a frantic panic anxious
9:59
short
10:00
harsh when we feel those things
10:03
how can we possibly demonstrate love
10:05
that is patient
10:07
kind and
10:08
as the bible says not easily angered
10:11
we have to slow
10:13
down
10:15
the solution to hurry
10:17
maybe following jesus's way of peace and
10:19
love but how do we do this in a
10:22
in the fast-paced world in which we live
10:25
this may feel too simplistic to be right
10:29
but but it's not are you ready come to
10:32
jesus
10:33
come fully present to him
10:35
again i know sunday school answer right
10:37
this is what we would expect but in the
10:39
gospel of matthew we hear these these
10:42
amazingly powerful words in the 28th
10:44
verse of chapter 11
10:46
he says come to me all of you who are
10:48
weary and burdened
10:50
and i will give you rest
10:52
take my yoke upon you and learn from me
10:55
for i am gentle and humbled in heart
10:58
and you will find rest for your souls
11:00
for my yoke is easy and my burden
11:02
is
11:03
light
11:05
if jesus showed up to your house
11:08
tomorrow morning
11:09
how much attention would you give him
11:12
would you let your phone distract you
11:14
every time it dings with that random
11:15
message
11:16
would you tell him that he can only have
11:18
10 minutes because you had meetings on
11:20
your calendar
11:22
many of us have no problem coming to
11:24
jesus in faith
11:26
but you come to him
11:28
by faith
11:30
here's what i mean by that
11:33
do you physically bring yourself to him
11:36
i'm talking
11:37
slow down
11:39
sit
11:40
stop
11:42
and be with jesus
11:44
the very act of slowing down trains our
11:46
souls to resist hurry and
11:48
and it increases our capacity to be
11:50
present with god and and for that matter
11:53
with others
11:55
paul tells us in romans chapter 12 he
11:57
says to offer your bodies as a living
12:01
sacrifice holy and pleasing to god this
12:03
is your true and proper
12:05
worship
12:07
your body is not some lame vehicle for
12:09
our souls to endure this life and then
12:12
escape into heaven
12:14
your body is a part of how god made you
12:16
it's how he sees you and a part of how
12:18
we worship him
12:20
what we must learn to do is to to bring
12:22
all of us to him
12:24
not just our minds as we race from one
12:26
calendar item to another but actually
12:28
bring ourselves our
12:30
full selves to him
12:32
when we think of spiritual disciplines
12:33
we often think of things like
12:35
fasting
12:37
worship
12:39
scripture reading you know the the big
12:41
ones
12:42
but as weird as it sounds
12:44
at times slowing down is actually a
12:47
spiritual discipline
12:49
and in this world
12:50
the age of distraction self-absorption
12:53
the the pursuit of the american dream
12:56
it's a much needed spiritual discipline
12:58
one that all of us need
13:01
in that world
13:03
let's make sure we don't neglect the
13:05
most important thing
13:07
coming to jesus
13:09
and that really is the first step
13:11
slowing down enough to come fully
13:13
present
13:14
to jesus
13:15
and once you've done that next step
13:17
the next step
13:19
is to take on the yoke of jesus
13:22
it's one thing to believe in jesus or
13:24
agree that what jesus said
13:26
it's an entirely different thing another
13:29
thing
13:29
to do what jesus did
13:32
notice again how jesus says this we'll
13:34
read this passage again he says come to
13:37
me
13:38
all of you who are weary and burdened
13:40
and i'll give you rest
13:42
take my yoke upon you and learn from me
13:44
for i am gentle and humble in heart and
13:46
you will find rest for your souls for my
13:49
yoke is easy and my burden is
13:52
light
13:53
a yolk is a it's a farming tool
13:56
they use it to tie animals together so
13:58
that they could like pull a cart and
14:00
shoulder a load together it kind of kind
14:02
of balances the load so it was easier
14:04
for the animals
14:05
during the first century it was also a
14:07
common idiom for a rabbi's way of life
14:10
it was his way he taught people to
14:13
shoulder the weight of life
14:15
jesus says when you tie yourself to his
14:17
way of life you you get rest for your
14:19
soul and you know
14:21
it makes sense
14:23
because jesus was busy
14:25
but he was never in a hurry
14:27
he spent time in solitude he took time
14:30
to pray and get away from the noise
14:32
he spent time with a few friends that
14:35
that impacted many he was busy but
14:38
present
14:39
he was busy but rested he was busy but
14:43
attuned to god's
14:45
will
14:46
you want an unhurried life
14:48
come to jesus
14:50
take his yoke upon you
14:52
and finally here's the last step
14:55
lighten up
14:57
one of my favorite thing
14:59
to grow in the garden if i did a garden
15:01
i'm a horrible gardener is cucumbers
15:04
i even found a very specific seed that
15:06
in my opinion produces the best
15:08
cucumbers and they get even better when
15:10
you put them on a trellis
15:12
see cucumber plants are if you don't
15:14
know vines that like to to grab a hold
15:16
of things and spread out or if given the
15:18
chance climb
15:20
not only does it maximize your garden
15:22
space but it also allows you to grow
15:24
better fruit
15:25
vegetables
15:26
or fruit whatever they are
15:28
cucumbers
15:30
are not in direct contact with the
15:31
ground they're better
15:33
but they aren't the only plant like this
15:35
i remember our very first garden that we
15:37
had as a family
15:38
was our first house as a family out of
15:40
seminary and we had this raised garden
15:42
and we we planted these tomato plants
15:45
and those things grew like trees and
15:47
when i say trees i mean they were
15:48
gigantic plants and we had them in in a
15:52
tomato cage is basically like like a
15:53
trellis right and and they were so heavy
15:56
and so big that they tipped the whole
15:57
thing over and they just fell over
16:00
because some plants are weird like they
16:03
can produce more fruit than they're
16:04
capable of supporting
16:06
it's weird because it seems well seems
16:08
counterproductive doesn't it
16:10
and that my friends is why you use
16:11
trellises
16:12
the cucumbers can hang without
16:14
destroying the plant or overburdening
16:15
the vine and the tomatoes can grow large
16:17
and healthy without crashing the plant
16:19
to the ground
16:20
because tomatoes on the ground
16:22
they're not good
16:24
when jesus invites us to yoke ourselves
16:26
to him what he's saying is our
16:28
relationship with him is like building
16:30
up a trellis for our life
16:32
when we follow jesus we find rest that
16:35
keeps us from overboard burdening or
16:38
damaging and destroying our lives
16:40
so in a way
16:42
jesus is telling us to lighten up
16:45
rest in him
16:47
yoke ourselves to him and we will find
16:49
that the troubles and stress of this
16:50
life which will happen
16:52
will not weigh us down
16:55
we're going to talk more about this in
16:56
the coming weeks but god actually
16:58
designed us
16:59
to depend on him for rest
17:02
it was written into the code when you
17:03
were created
17:05
when we rely on our relationship with
17:07
god to bring us rest
17:09
it lightens up our life it slows us down
17:12
it reminds us that god created all of
17:15
this
17:16
and he holds the universe in his hands
17:19
i love how eugene peterson paraphrased
17:22
this matthew passage these verses in the
17:25
message bible
17:26
he says it this way says are you tired
17:30
worn out burned out on religion
17:34
come to me
17:35
get away with me and you'll recover your
17:37
life
17:39
i'll show you how to take a real rest
17:42
walk with me and work with me
17:45
watch how i do it
17:47
learn the unforced rhythms of grace i
17:49
love that learn the unforced rhythms of
17:52
grace
17:54
i won't lay anything heavy or
17:55
ill-fitting on you
17:57
keep company with me and you'll learn to
18:00
live freely
18:02
and lightly
18:05
friends this is an invitation from jesus
18:08
for all the tired
18:10
and burned out
18:12
for those reaching for another cup of
18:13
coffee just to get through the day
18:17
maybe you can relate
18:19
jesus's invitation is to travel through
18:21
life at his side to step out of the
18:24
burnout culture and into a
18:27
life of soul rest
18:30
are you ready to unburden your life
18:33
no no stop for a moment this isn't just
18:35
some rhetorical question the preacher's
18:37
asking i'm seriously think about your
18:39
life
18:40
the anxiety the stress the chaos the the
18:43
lack of time the burden that you carry
18:47
now think about it
18:49
aren't you ready to unburden your life
18:52
don't you want a life that is
18:55
unhurried
18:58
can i share with you a couple simple
18:59
next steps that you can take to become
19:01
unhurried
19:03
okay
19:04
ready practice number one
19:07
slow
19:08
down
19:09
practice
19:10
the speed limit
19:12
get in the the longest line at the
19:14
checkout like take necessary steps that
19:16
force you to actually slow down in your
19:19
life and i know these might be really
19:20
hard for you like driving 55 and a 55
19:23
might be hard or getting the long line
19:25
at checkout when you have other things
19:26
to do might be difficult
19:28
but practice putting yourself in
19:30
situations that actually force you to
19:32
slow down
19:35
maybe those are too painful for you to
19:36
try try this
19:39
cut something out of your calendar
19:41
like remove things
19:44
out of your schedule to free up your
19:46
time
19:47
bob goff who's a christian author
19:49
said that he had the practice of cutting
19:51
something out of his calendar every
19:54
thursday so every thursday he sat down
19:55
and began to cut something out and
19:57
eventually that calendar begins to get
19:59
pretty trim
20:00
and it focuses on the really important
20:02
things but it frees up your time so that
20:04
you can slow down
20:07
practices that slow us down they're
20:09
they're like a trellis for our life
20:11
they're simple
20:13
but they have powerful impact and make
20:15
your fruit better
20:16
these are just a couple ways that you
20:18
can unhurry your life and and i'm sure
20:20
you can come up with many more
20:23
when we unhurry our lives we're we're
20:25
able to come fully to jesus
20:28
we don't just get
20:29
less hurry or more sleep
20:32
he promises that we get rest for our
20:34
souls
20:35
and we find peace the peace that
20:38
the peace that you've been looking for
20:42
friends jesus demonstrated in
20:44
an unhurried life
20:46
where space for god and love for people
20:48
were the top priorities he lived freely
20:51
and lightly
20:53
free from the the discontent and the
20:54
distraction that comes from too much
20:56
money and and stuff we don't need
21:00
jesus first said yes to the father into
21:02
his kingdom
21:03
and that opened the door for him to say
21:05
no to so many things that were less
21:07
important ultimately jesus said yes to
21:09
the cross
21:11
and paying the ultimate sacrifice so
21:13
that you may be forgiven and you may be
21:15
set free
21:17
when we acknowledge that when when we
21:19
rest in what jesus accomplished on the
21:21
cross we enter into a relationship with
21:23
our heavenly father
21:25
and in that jesus says
21:27
come to
21:28
me my yoke
21:31
is easy
21:32
my burden
21:34
is light
21:36
friends
21:37
you've been looking for peace
21:40
dare i say
21:42
you've been longing for peace in your
21:44
life
21:46
meanwhile
21:47
life is flying by
21:50
you are hurried you are burdened you are
21:53
anxious
21:54
and you're stressed
21:56
what you really want
21:58
is an unhurried life
22:01
well
22:02
it's yours to have
22:04
but to have that unhurried life you must
22:06
respond to the call of jesus
22:09
and that call is simple
22:11
yet life-changing
22:14
come to me jesus says
22:16
and i
22:17
will give you
22:19
rest
22:21
the rest you were created for
22:25
the rest you were meant for
22:27
the rest friends
22:28
that you've been longing for
