well hello I'm Misha I'm one of our
0:05
teaching pastors and real quick I want
0:07
to plug a series coming your way in
0:10
October called winning at home this is
0:14
going to be more than just a preaching
0:15
series we're going to have resources
0:17
we're going to have some opportunities
0:19
outside this building some challenges
0:21
for you each week and I'm confident that
0:24
if you will engage with this series
0:26
throughout October and November it it
0:29
has the chance to really transform your
0:33
family so if you want to scan that QR
0:35
code or if you see a card like this if
0:37
you grab this scan the QR code you'll
0:39
find out more information about that
0:40
series and this is a handy way you can
0:42
invite someone who needs to win at home
0:44
to join us in October and November all
0:48
right for today
0:49
I want to start by asking you have you
0:51
ever seen like a little kid take their
0:54
very first steps
0:56
I got a video of my son from a few years
0:58
ago doing that I want you to see this
1:00
this is awesome
1:03
look at him
1:05
he's like what is this a tree what is a
1:09
tree in my way for she is so wobbly
1:12
curious
1:14
slow really slow kids walk slow
1:19
look
1:20
our mission as a church is to help
1:22
people take next steps with God and
1:24
sometimes when we start a journey of
1:26
following Jesus we walk kind of like
1:28
that don't we a little wobbly cautious
1:32
unsure but also curious
1:36
and that's okay look wherever you're at
1:39
in your relationship with God the
1:40
question to ask is what is the next step
1:44
and as a church we're devoted to helping
1:47
you take that step in fact we aren't
1:50
primarily concerned with where you're
1:52
where you are right now in your
1:54
relationship with God that matters we
1:55
care about it but our primary concern is
1:59
where you're going which is why this
2:01
preaching series is all about helping
2:03
you take your next step with God or as
2:05
we've been saying it's about becoming a
2:07
disciple or a follower of Jesus and
2:11
we've called this series simple because
2:13
we're following Jesus is simple it's not
2:16
easy but it's it's simple consider for
2:19
instance Jesus's invitation to his first
2:21
ever followers he found some young men
2:24
who were cleaning their dad's fishing
2:26
boat and he said to them this come
2:28
follow me and I'll send you out to fish
2:30
for people
2:31
his invitation was that simple follow me
2:33
so our mission as a church is to help
2:36
people follow Jesus one step at a time
2:40
now the past two weeks we've talked
2:42
about how we do this you take next steps
2:44
with God through through knowing god and
2:46
growing with others but today our
2:48
objective is to discover how followers
2:51
of Jesus Take next steps in changing the
2:54
world now that can seem like a daunting
2:57
task change the world but it's actually
3:00
simple and followers of Jesus have been
3:04
changing the world ever since he rose
3:06
from the dead
3:07
the way the followers of Jesus changed
3:10
the world is one step at a time so today
3:13
I'm gonna show us what this looks like
3:15
by walking us through a story in
3:17
scripture about a man named Nicodemus
3:19
and then at the very end I'm going to
3:22
share with you some ways we try to make
3:24
it simple for you to take a next step in
3:26
changing the world so if you want to
3:29
follow along I'll be in John chapter 3.
3:31
one thing that's interesting for me is
3:34
that John who wrote what we're going to
3:36
read today was one of those young men
3:38
that was on that boat when Jesus called
3:41
those young men to follow him and he
3:42
dropped his Nets and he spent the rest
3:45
of his life following Jesus so John
3:48
chapter 3 where we pick up the story
3:50
Jesus has begun his ministry and it's
3:53
obvious to everyone that he has the it
3:56
factor I mean people are flocking to him
3:58
people are following him people are
4:00
excited about what he's teaching and
4:03
even the Jewish religious leaders are
4:05
taking note of what he's doing but I
4:09
wouldn't call their interest in him
4:10
excitement they were concerned
4:15
maybe a little jealous I mean they had
4:17
worked hard to earn their influence and
4:19
their position and now Jesus comes along
4:20
with some new teachings and
4:22
turns water into wine people seem to
4:25
like that and now all of a sudden
4:26
everyone wants to follow him
4:28
but these Jewish religious leaders were
4:30
not so sure
4:32
John chapter 3 verse 1. now there was a
4:35
Pharisee a man named Nicodemus who was a
4:37
member of the Jewish ruling Council he
4:40
came to Jesus at night and said Rabbi we
4:42
know that you are a teacher who has come
4:44
from God for no one could perform the
4:46
signs that you are doing if God were not
4:48
with him
4:50
I want you to notice a few things here
4:52
first Nicodemus comes to Jesus at night
4:55
now this would be significant because as
4:57
a member of the of the Jewish ruling
5:00
Council coming to Jesus at night would
5:02
mean that this would happen in darkness
5:03
and so this conversation would be a
5:06
secret
5:07
it's also important to notice that he
5:11
calls Jesus Rabbi which means teacher
5:13
and he also mentions hey it's obvious
5:15
that God is with you
5:17
now
5:19
Nicodemus also was a teacher and he also
5:22
believed God to be with him what he's
5:25
doing here is he's playing a bit of a
5:26
power game because he knows the crowds
5:28
have been calling Jesus the son of God
5:30
and he's not about to acknowledge that
5:32
or admit that
5:34
instead he's putting Jesus on the same
5:37
plane with himself and the other
5:39
religious leaders like we're kind of the
5:41
same
5:42
well Jesus responds like this he says
5:44
very truly I tell you no one can see the
5:47
kingdom of God unless they are born
5:49
again now I read this and I'm like why
5:53
you got to go use that weird language
5:54
Jesus like I mean born again no one's
5:57
going to understand what you're talking
5:58
about and maybe you've heard that phrase
6:00
before and maybe you have some
6:01
understanding about what Born Again
6:03
means but Nicodemus this is the first
6:05
time he's heard it and he thinks it's
6:06
weird and he's like it's confusing and
6:09
we know that or I at least assume that
6:11
because of the way he responds he goes
6:14
how can someone be born when they are
6:15
old surely they cannot enter a second
6:18
time into their mother's womb to be born
6:21
and maybe he's joking around a little
6:23
bit but he obviously doesn't understand
6:25
the spiritual implications of what Jesus
6:28
is trying to say
6:30
and so Jesus goes on and he says well
6:32
very truly I tell you no one can enter
6:34
the kingdom of God unless they are born
6:35
of water and the spirit flesh gives
6:38
birth to flesh but the spirit gives
6:40
birth to Spirit you should not be
6:41
surprised am I saying You must be born
6:43
again the wind blows wherever it pleases
6:46
you hear it sound but you cannot tell
6:47
where it comes from or where it's going
6:49
so it is with everyone born of the
6:52
spirit
6:53
Jesus is saying look this isn't a
6:56
physical rebirth
6:58
it's a spiritual thing
7:00
and everyone who's a part of the kingdom
7:02
of God they go through a sort of
7:05
spiritual transformation and and like
7:08
the wind you can't really pinpoint where
7:10
it starts or kind of even how it moves
7:13
but but when someone when someone
7:15
experiences God's spirit inwardly it
7:19
it's such a radical transformation that
7:20
on the other side of it it's as if
7:22
they're a whole new person
7:25
to which Nicodemus says well how can
7:28
this be
7:29
and I'm sympathetic with Nicodemus here
7:33
I think he's trying to understand
7:36
it's just
7:38
him and Jesus are not on the same page
7:41
right and I don't know what you do when
7:43
you're not on the same page with someone
7:45
you probably get a little frustrated I
7:47
and we all have that tell when we're
7:49
frustrated I do this thing with my jaw
7:51
where I'm like
7:52
I'll like crack my jaw I picture Jesus
7:55
as more of like a rubbing the temples
7:57
kind of guy and I imagine that they're
7:58
just at night in this conversation like
8:00
what how do I get my point across like
8:03
Nicodemus is like what's the question
8:05
that I can ask
8:07
yeah
8:08
see
8:10
nicodemus's understanding of the kingdom
8:12
of God was just so vastly different than
8:15
what Jesus was presenting
8:18
he grew up learning what it meant to be
8:19
a part of the the Jewish ruling Council
8:23
and see they believed that membership in
8:25
the kingdom of God belonged to those who
8:27
had some sort of academic understanding
8:29
and knowledge of the scriptures
8:32
it belonged to people who had a strict
8:34
observance of the Old Testament law and
8:36
who were devoted to certain rituals and
8:38
and and religious traditions
8:41
they believe that membership in the
8:44
kingdom of God was earned through what
8:47
you do and what you know and what Jesus
8:49
is presenting is just
8:52
when he talks about this radical
8:54
transformation that's sort of like a
8:56
rebirth
8:57
Nicodemus is just struggling to
9:00
understand
9:01
and so Jesus goes on and he says this
9:06
he says very truly I tell you we speak
9:09
of what we know and we testify to what
9:11
we have seen but still you people do not
9:13
accept our testimony I've spoken to you
9:16
of Earthly things and you do not believe
9:18
how then will you believe if I speak of
9:20
heavenly things no one has ever gone
9:22
into heaven except the one who came from
9:24
Heaven the son of man and just as Moses
9:26
lifted up the snake in the wilderness so
9:28
the son of man must be lifted up that
9:31
everyone who believes may have eternal
9:33
life in him and what he's saying is like
9:36
look you religious leaders
9:39
you want to think that everything about
9:40
God has some sort of Earthly explanation
9:45
that all of the lessons that God wants
9:47
to teach have some sort of tangible
9:49
application but some spiritual things
9:52
you have to experience them to learn
9:55
them
9:56
but it's as if he says at the end well
9:58
you want something tangible though
9:59
here's something tangible the son of man
10:01
must be lifted up that everyone who
10:03
believes may have eternal life in him
10:07
and the conversation ends
10:11
and we come to verse 16.
10:14
and in verse 16 John presents for his
10:17
readers
10:18
a really clear picture of what Jesus is
10:21
trying to get across to Nicodemus in
10:23
this conversation maybe you've heard
10:24
this before
10:26
John 3 16 for God so loved the world
10:28
that he gave his one and only son that
10:31
whoever believes in him shall not perish
10:34
but have
10:35
eternal life
10:36
for God did not send his son into the
10:38
world to condemn the world but to save
10:40
the world through him whoever believes
10:43
in him is not condemned but whoever does
10:45
not believe stands condemned already
10:46
because they have not believed in the
10:48
name of God's one and only son and what
10:51
John is saying here is he's he's he's
10:52
painting the clearest picture we can
10:55
have that salvation is found in one
10:57
place and one place alone
11:00
and it's Jesus
11:03
and what Jesus is doing in this
11:05
conversation with Nicodemus is he's
11:07
trying to get Nicodemus to come to terms
11:08
with what he believes about that
11:12
does Nicodemus believe that Jesus is
11:14
just a good teacher or does he believe
11:16
that Jesus is
11:18
the son of God
11:21
and this is the question for us today
11:25
do we believe salvation is found in
11:27
Christ alone
11:30
it's that simple
11:32
and there is depth to this
11:34
there are topics and themes throughout
11:36
what we just read that we could spend
11:37
our entire life studying and not be able
11:39
to wrap our minds around but to begin
11:41
the Journey of Faith
11:43
to receive salvation Jesus's command is
11:46
simple he says believe in me
11:49
so
11:51
do you believe
11:53
that Jesus is the son of God
11:56
who was sent by God
11:58
to save the world
12:03
for Nicodemus this just would have been
12:06
so different than anything he's ever
12:08
heard before and he was an expert in the
12:11
Hebrew scriptures
12:14
but what Jesus was presenting about
12:15
salvation it would have just been
12:18
earth-shattering to the foundation of
12:20
everything he had known and everything
12:21
he had lived for and if you grew up like
12:24
Nicodemus
12:26
believing that salvation was somehow
12:29
earned through human efforts or good
12:31
behavior
12:33
perhaps this would shake the foundation
12:36
of your life as well and you may find
12:38
yourself asking okay if I do believe the
12:41
Jesus is the son of God
12:44
what does that mean for us what does it
12:46
mean for our lives
12:49
this is what it means
12:51
it means that when God does a
12:52
transformational work in US
12:55
eventually that influences our Behavior
12:59
God's spirit is the one that does the
13:02
work that causes the change not the
13:05
other way around which means
13:08
that we are not saved because we serve
13:11
we are not saved because we pray we are
13:14
not saved because we give to the church
13:16
we're not saved because we know God grow
13:18
with others and change the world we are
13:20
saved by the love of God demonstrated
13:23
through the sacrifice of Jesus
13:27
and when we believe in him when we put
13:29
our trust in Jesus then we we serve
13:32
and we give and we worship and it's all
13:36
out of the Overflow of what God is doing
13:39
in US
13:43
so what does that mean
13:48
for you
13:49
what does believing in Jesus mean for
13:52
your life or if you're not there yet
13:54
what might believing in Jesus mean
13:58
for you
14:01
my dad worked for the Salvation Army his
14:03
entire life
14:05
he he coordinated Community programs so
14:08
he ran like soup kitchens and he did
14:10
some kid stuff he he coordinated the
14:11
Bell ringers if you ever seen them at
14:13
Christmas time
14:16
because of the nature of my dad's career
14:18
almost every day he was coming into
14:20
contact with people who were in
14:22
Desperate desperate need people who had
14:25
no food
14:26
or clothing or shelter sometimes for
14:29
days and weeks
14:30
and I always saw my dad treat people in
14:33
need with just tremendous dignity and
14:37
respect he always took care of them not
14:41
just their physical needs but took care
14:43
of them as people he devoted his entire
14:45
career to changing the world for people
14:49
it was the way that he responded to what
14:51
God had done in his life and in this
14:54
room connected to our church family
14:57
are people who have overcome addictions
15:00
restored marriages given sacrificially
15:02
fostered and adopted children because
15:05
they've asked themselves the question
15:07
what does following Jesus
15:10
mean
15:11
for me see when God does the work in US
15:14
it eventually becomes evident in how we
15:18
live
15:19
the order is important
15:22
so we get this conversation between
15:24
Jesus and Nicodemus and you know what
15:27
annoys me about this conversation that's
15:29
all we get
15:31
like I want to know how Nicodemus
15:33
responded did he believe did he have
15:35
more questions
15:37
I don't know
15:38
but the next time Nicodemus shows up in
15:40
scripture is in John chapter 7. and
15:43
something seems different
15:47
in John chapter 7 Nicodemus is in a room
15:50
with the other Jewish religious leaders
15:52
and they're talking about Jesus because
15:55
Jesus's Fame is spreading like wildfire
15:58
and they're like we've got to put an end
15:59
to this so they sent guards out to
16:01
arrest Jesus but when the guards got to
16:03
where Jesus was the crowds around him
16:05
were so favorable and when they started
16:08
to hear Jesus teach they were smitten
16:10
and they didn't have the guts to arrest
16:12
him we read this John chapter 7. finally
16:16
the temple guards went back to the chief
16:18
priests and the Pharisees who asked them
16:19
why didn't you bring him in oh no one
16:22
ever spoke the way this man does the
16:24
guards replied you mean he has deceived
16:26
you also the Pharisees retorted have any
16:30
of the rulers or of the Pharisees
16:31
believed in him no and I imagine
16:34
Nicodemus is standing there like
16:37
none of us like no one else is going to
16:39
raise their hand okay me neither all
16:41
right
16:42
but this mob that knows nothing of the
16:44
law there's a curse on them now
16:46
Nicodemus who had gone to Jesus earlier
16:48
and who was one of their own number
16:50
asked does our law condemn a man without
16:52
first hearing him to find out what he
16:54
has been doing all right no profession
16:56
of Faith here but he does seem to be
16:59
maybe sort of trying to stick up for
17:01
Jesus
17:02
and the other rulers pick up on this and
17:04
they say this
17:05
are you from Galilee too look into it
17:08
you'll find that a prophet does not come
17:10
out Galilee okay not the strongest
17:14
showing of Faith you could imagine but
17:16
something seems to be maybe turning he's
17:20
not willing to give up his role or his
17:22
reputation but he does subtly defend
17:25
Jesus and it just makes me wonder did
17:27
something happen back in in the night in
17:30
that conversation he had with Jesus it
17:32
started something stirring in him
17:36
I don't know
17:38
because that's all we get
17:39
and the next time and the only other
17:41
time Nicodemus shows up in scripture is
17:44
in John chapter 19. at this point Jesus
17:47
has been crucified his body is taken
17:49
down from the cross and we read this
17:52
later Joseph of Arimathea asked pilate
17:55
for the body of Jesus now Joseph was a
17:57
disciple of Jesus but secretly because
17:59
he feared the Jewish Leaders with
18:01
pilate's permission he came and took the
18:02
body away he was accompanied by
18:05
Nicodemus the man who earlier had
18:07
visited Jesus that night hmm it's
18:10
interesting
18:11
Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and
18:14
aloes about 75 pounds taking Jesus's
18:17
body the two of them wrapped it with the
18:19
spices and strips of linen this was in
18:21
accordance with Jewish burial Customs at
18:24
the place where Jesus was crucified
18:25
there was a garden and in the garden a
18:27
new Tomb in which no one had ever been
18:29
laid because it was the Jewish Day of
18:31
preparation and since the tomb was
18:33
nearby they laid Jesus there
18:37
now what in the world is Nicodemus doing
18:40
here
18:42
why is he burying a man that the council
18:45
he belongs to us has accused of
18:47
blasphemy and has sentenced to death
18:50
like what is going on
18:53
and once again the truth is we can't
18:55
know for certain because that's all we
18:56
get but there's just something about him
18:58
being there and I don't think John
19:00
accidentally mentioned him by name
19:04
I think something
19:06
started stirring in him and perhaps at
19:09
some point he started to think
19:12
maybe Jesus is more than just a teacher
19:16
maybe his connection with God is a
19:19
little bit
19:20
deeper
19:21
and then I just wondered if when he saw
19:24
Jesus lifted up on the cross
19:28
he remembered back to that night when
19:29
Jesus said this to him
19:31
the son of man must be lifted up
19:34
that everyone who believes may have
19:36
eternal life in him
19:39
and I wonder if something clicked and he
19:43
began to take steps to follow Jesus and
19:46
at first they were sort of wobbly
19:48
toddler-like
19:50
not so sure steps maybe he was wondering
19:52
how much of my life is going to be
19:54
impacted by this if I do believe
19:58
we can't know what was happening inside
20:01
of Nicodemus but something shows up in
20:03
his behavior there seems to be a bit of
20:06
a change and maybe that's where you are
20:07
today
20:10
you want to believe you're ready to
20:12
believe you do believe but the question
20:14
you're asking is but what does this mean
20:16
about my life then
20:20
if that's you know this as all of us
20:24
are wrestling with what we believe
20:28
as all of us are are trying to figure
20:30
out what's what's my next step with God
20:34
our actions our worship our contribution
20:37
the things we do the things we give they
20:39
all come out of an overflow of what God
20:42
is doing in US following Jesus begins
20:46
with this transformational work that God
20:48
does in us that eventually shows up in
20:51
the way we
20:52
live
20:54
I said at the beginning
20:56
followers of Jesus change the world what
20:59
I mean by that is this followers of
21:01
Jesus live in response to what God has
21:04
done in them and it's actually God
21:06
working through us
21:08
that changes
21:09
the world around us
21:11
see like Nicodemus we all come to Jesus
21:15
in darkness
21:18
we all sin
21:19
and our sin separates us from God who is
21:23
the light
21:24
Jesus's entire life was about bringing
21:27
us back into relationship with God his
21:29
death and Resurrection paid the price
21:30
for our sin it reconciled this to God it
21:33
it it unseparated us from the light
21:38
for God so loved the world
21:41
that he gave his one and only son
21:45
that whoever believes in him
21:47
shall not perish but have eternal life
21:53
do you believe that
21:59
because it's simple
22:01
followers of Jesus live in response to
22:05
what God has done
22:06
for them
22:09
11 years ago my wife and I started
22:13
attending this church we were newly
22:14
married we were new to Livingston County
22:16
we were looking for a church so we came
22:18
here and we're like okay this this works
22:22
a few months later we were like okay we
22:24
need to take a next step we need to get
22:25
more involved around here and we were at
22:28
Brighton High School at the time the
22:29
church met at Brighton High School and I
22:30
was getting coffee in the lobby
22:33
and I heard about this team that met at
22:35
7am and they would go to VG's in
22:38
Brighton it's bushes now but it used to
22:39
be VG's they'd go at 7am and they'd pick
22:41
up all these like day old danishes and
22:43
donuts to to give out in the mornings
22:46
and I was like I'm such a morning person
22:49
I'm like there's a way I can serve at 7
22:51
A.M I'm in
22:54
I had no idea what God had in store
22:58
from my willingness to to join that team
23:00
I thought I was just taking the next
23:01
step with God and if my next step man I
23:03
got first dibs on the snacks I'm like
23:04
okay
23:07
but that step began a journey
23:12
a journey that I'm still on
23:15
and I don't know if I'll ever change the
23:17
entire world
23:18
but I hope that as I continue to take
23:20
next steps with God I hope that I change
23:22
someone's world
23:25
and as I've gotten to know many of you
23:27
and your kids and your families
23:31
my prayer is that is that my next steps
23:34
in some way will impact your life
23:38
I want my decision to follow Jesus to to
23:42
change the world around me because what
23:45
I've seen over the years of my journey
23:47
of following Jesus is that the world has
23:49
changed when when followers of Jesus
23:51
just take that next step
23:54
in his Direction
23:57
so what about you
24:00
what does it mean for you
24:03
to believe in Jesus what does it mean
24:05
for you to live in response
24:08
so what God has done for you
24:10
what's your next step
24:13
I'm going to give you some time in just
24:15
a minute here to talk to God about that
24:17
but real quick I want I want to
24:19
highlight some of the ways that we as a
24:21
church try to make it simple for you to
24:23
take a Next Step
24:24
in changing the world and the simplest
24:27
way is through joining a team that was
24:30
my first step around here
24:31
get on the team I joined the pick up the
24:33
donuts team and I don't think it still
24:35
exists but maybe we need to bring that
24:37
back
24:38
look if you're not on a team maybe your
24:41
next step is is to join one our weekend
24:44
volunteer teams they change the world by
24:47
creating environments for kids and
24:49
students and adults I mean some people
24:51
the way they the way they serve is
24:53
through playing guitar they change the
24:56
world by creating environments where we
24:58
can hear
25:00
the saving knowledge of Jesus
25:03
if you're not on team maybe that's your
25:05
next step and if it is just fill the
25:07
ticket you got on your way in
25:09
that's all you got to do
25:11
maybe you're already on a team and maybe
25:14
your next step is to move in the
25:15
direction of leading a team and if
25:18
that's you that's what I want you to do
25:19
today even if right now if you want to I
25:21
want you to send a message send a text
25:22
message to the person who leads your
25:24
team
25:25
and just say hey don't get too excited
25:28
yet
25:29
but maybe sort of kind of potentially
25:31
God might be asking me that maybe I
25:33
should step in the direction of
25:34
apprenticing to lead this team add all
25:36
the caveats you want just send the
25:38
message and ask them to pray for you and
25:40
ask them to maybe have a conversation
25:42
with you
25:43
if you lead a team maybe your next step
25:45
is to ask someone on your team to
25:47
Apprentice as a leader with you
25:49
maybe you've been on a team a while and
25:50
you've built some friendships and maybe
25:52
your next step is to is to ask someone
25:54
on your team if they'll go on an
25:55
intentional discipleship Journey with
25:57
you
25:59
look when we say the followers of Jesus
26:01
change the world that doesn't mean you
26:03
got to wake up tomorrow morning with
26:05
some revolutionary idea maybe you will
26:08
but it's much more likely
26:10
that you'll change the world by
26:12
responding to Jesus
26:14
with those day-to-day sort of
26:17
actions that influence the people around
26:20
you let's pray
26:25
God you are
26:27
you're awesome
26:29
and I thank you
26:31
for choosing us
26:34
to participate in
26:36
this story you've been writing since
26:40
creation
26:42
thank you for giving us talents and
26:44
gifts and interests and then thank you
26:46
for putting those to use in growing your
26:49
kingdom
26:50
God thank you for making membership in
26:53
your kingdom not about what we do
26:55
but about what Jesus did
26:57
thank you for giving us a role in the
27:00
body of Christ but
27:02
but that he is the head
27:05
so God I just pray for all of us
27:07
because we wrestle with what we believe
27:09
God give us clarity
27:11
show us
27:13
show us our next step and God build a
27:16
family a church family around us that
27:19
helps us take that we love you
27:21
in Jesus name amen
27:25
we're going to take a moment now we do
27:27
this at the end of all
